Open letter to European Commission on critical raw materials plans

miningeuropecovid

On 4th September, the European Commission (EC) released a new communication detailing the future of its policies on mining raw materials critical for renewable energy, digital and industrial transitions in Europe.

The EC’s public relations has framed these measures in terms of sustainability and a green recovery after COVID-19, but in reality they mean one thing- a massive drive to expand mining in Europe.

Sign a new civil society letter objecting to Europe’s plans for a new mining boom.

Deadline: Friday 25th September. 11am GMT+2.

The European Commission may believe this is good enough, but we do not. The latest studies show that we cannot mine our way out of the climate crisis towards a green future. In fact, trying to do so will cause massive social injustice and destroy critical ecosystems that help the climate self-regulate.

A group of civil society organisations has written a letter to relevant officials at the Commission calling on them to change course urgently, taking measures to de-grow the EU’s material use, recognise European communities’ Right to Say No to Mining and end exploitation of mineral and metal-rich Global South nations through unfair trade deals.

Read and sign on to the letter here.

We hope to deliver this message before a crucial meeting about the EC’s new mining plans on 28th September. For the letter to really make an impact, we need a large number of organisations, networks, communities and individuals to sign on.

You do not need to be from Europe to sign on, but please do so before 11am (GMT+2) on Friday 25th September!
